Sunday, September 27: the Seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost

The flowers in the sanctuary today were presented to the glory of God by Marty Boone in loving memory of her brother, Foster.

This morning’s Prelude was an arrangement by Michael Bedford of “Morning Has Broken,” rung by the Sacred Sounds Handbell Choir at the opening of the September 24, 2017 worship service. The Anthem, “From All That Dwell Below the Skies,” was sung on May 5, 2019 by the Chancel Choir, directed by Dr. Michael Lancaster and accompanied by Angie Jenkins on organ.

Steve and Delaine Mehder offered the Welcome and Call to Worship, the Prayer of Confession, and Passing of the Peace from their home. Thank you for taking part in the worship service in this meaningful way, Steve and Delaine!

Pastor Curtis preached on a reading from Matthew 21:28-32, recounting the parable of two sons: one who refused his father’s command but later relented and obeyed, and the other who promised to comply but did not follow through. Curtis’ sermon was titled “When Yes and No are Not Enough.”

We were treated to a beautifully moving Musical Offering from our choir intern, soprano Christine Reeder. Christine sang the spiritual “Deep River” arranged by H.T. Burleigh. We are very grateful to Christine for this marvelous addition to our service.

Angie played the Benediction hymn, “God Be With You Til We Meet Again” and the Postlude, “Psalm 19” by Benedetto Marcello and arranged by Diane Bish, on the pipe organ.

A reminder: Next Sunday at 12 Noon there will be a virtual Congregational Meeting via Zoom, to approve the nominations for the Elder Class of 2023. An email will be sent out to all members of the congregation with the names to be placed in nomination and instructions for participating in the meeting.
