Sunday, August 23rd–12th Sunday after Pentecost

The beautiful arrangement of dahlias in the sanctuary was presented to the glory of God by Betty Fisher in loving memory of Mary Thompson, longtime faithful servant of First Presbyterian Church and friend to Highlands.

The service opened with an August 25, 2019 recording of the Sacred Sounds Handbell Choir’s rendition of the “Theme from Brahms Symphony No. 1,” arranged by Sharon Rogers and directed by Michael Lancaster.

Obie Oakley gave the Welcome and Call to Worship, the Prayer of Confession, and Passing of the Peace from his home in Charlotte. Thank you for your participation in the service, Obie!

The anthem, also from August 25 of 2019, was Cesar Franck’s “Panis Angelicus,” sung by the Carolina Women’s Chorale and directed by Michael Lancaster. Susan Clearman accompanied on piano. This arrangement of “Panis Angelicus” was by Andris Solims.

Pastor Curtis’ sermon was titled “Who?–Did you say?” based on the Scripture reading from Matthew 16:13-20, in which Jesus asks his disciples who people say that he is, and who the disciples themselves believe he is.

Angie Jenkins played the Benediction hymn, “God Be With You Til We Meet Again” and the glorious Postlude, “Fanfare in C Major” by Henry Purcell.
