Sunday, December 20: The Fourth Sunday of Advent

The Sacred Sounds Handbell Choir rang out James D. Kimball’s arrangement of “In the Bleak Midwinter” by Gustav Holst, as the morning’s Prelude to the worship service

. The handbell choir is directed by Dr. Michael Lancaster, who also directed the Chancel Choir in singing “Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus,” arranged by Robert Hobby, as our Anthem. Angie Jenkins accompanied on pipe organ. The Prelude had been recorded during the December 22, 2019 worship service, the Anthem on December 15 of the same year.

Delaine and Tom Nelson performed the lighting of the fourth Advent Candle and gave our Welcome and Call to Worship, Prayer of Confession and Passing of the Peace. We are truly grateful for their vital contribution to our worship service.

Pastor Curtis read the familiar Scripture story of Mary’s call by the angel Gabriel to bear the Christ child, found in Luke1:26-38. Curtis’ sermon, entitled “A Persistent Yes,” called on us to open ourselves to the voice of God in our hearts and, as Mary did, to answer with a trusting and faithful “yes” to his Word.

Pastor Emily offered the Prayers of God’s People and led the congregation in The Lord’s Prayer and the Offertory Prayer.

Angie Jenkins closed the service with the Benediction hymn, “God Be With You Til We Meet Again.” Her Postlude on the pipe organ was “Carol Medley” arranged by Robert J. Hughes.
