Sunday, December 6: Second Sunday of Advent

The morning’s Prelude was the Ancient Plainsong Melody “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel,” arranged by Roger C. Wilson and played by Angie Jenkins on Pipe Organ. The Anthem was “My Lord, What a Morning,” sung by the Chancel Choir, directed by Michael Lancaster and accompanied on organ by Angie Jenkins.

Our Choir Intern, Christine Reeder, sang the solo portions of the anthem. It was taken from the November 10, 2019 worship service.

Skip and Carol Hughes came into the sanctuary to perform the lighting of the second Advent candle and offer the Call to Worship. They also led the congregation in the Prayer of Confession and Passing of the Peace. It was a blessing to have your contribution to worship servivce, Carol and Skip.

Pastor Emily preached on a reading from Isaiah 40:1-11, which contains the familiar words “Comfort, comfort my people, says your God.” Her sermon, titled “Tidings of Comfort, Hope, and Joy” related some of the ways we give and receive comfort with one another. She affirmed our call to proclaim the good news even in the most difficult of times that the Prince of Peace is here, ruling the world with truth and grace, that God’s light still shines in the darkness.

Pastor Curtis led the congregation in the Prayers of God’s people and the Offertory Prayer.

Pastors Emily and Curtis offered the Sacrament of Holy Communion, inviting the congregation to join in taking the bread and cup of salvation in their homes.

Angie closed the service with our Benediction hymn, “God Be With You Til We Meet Again” and the marvelous Postlude, “How Beautiful Are the Feet of Them” from G.F. Handel’s “The Messiah,” arranged by John Scriveyner.
